I will be co-hosting a retreat this August centered on the Norse goddess Frigg. Her name means Beloved. She is called the Mother Goddess or the Great Goddess of Norse culture for a variety of reasons. Her association with Odin and his brothers Villi and Ve is one of them. Their names translate to Spirit, Will, and Holiness. She has married all three of them which gives them legitimacy to rule Asgard, the seat of the ruling gods in the nine worlds. It is through her power that they come into power.

Snorri describes Frigg as the goddess who knows everything and says nothing. Meaning, when she does speak, her words hold tremendous power. It is in the quieting down of the Spirit that we gain wisdom. And she taught Odin, the Spirit, the art of quietinging down, settling the nervous system, and gaining wisdom through reflection.

Beloved and the Spirit (Frigg and Odin) had a son called Baldr. He is the most honest, beautiful, and well loved god. But he looses his life in a difficult way. Frigg shows us how to grieve, how to work towards regaining our relationships, and how to let go when something is beyond our ability to salvage.

She has her own hall in the nine worlds. Fensalir, the hall within the fen or swamp. The swamp or bog was a liminal space where sacrifices could be recieved and communication between the living and the dead could take place. Protecting her all is the goddess Synn whose name means denial. Synn lets us know whether we are "clean" enough to enter. Have we done our work? Are we entering the space of Beloved with a clean heart?

Our boundary setting/Communication tool is named for Frigg. Frigg's Hand is the tool that quietens us down, clarifies our emotions, and helps us set boundaries with others. It is a communication tool that comes from the heart center and we will learn more about it at the retreat!

Snotra is one of her household. Snotra helps instruct us in the way we should behave, gets us cleaned up in order to meet Frigg.

Then there is Fulla, the goddess who hears the prayers over the horn. She cares for Frigg's shoes. That might seem like a funny job, but metaphorically, shoes are the symbol of travel through the nine worlds.

Frigg's messenger is Gna whose horse can ride over water and air. There are others in attendance at Fensalir but these are the primary goddesses with whom we will work as we get to know Frigg!

I hope you can join us for a day-long retreat into the Beloved!
