Welcome
Tusen Takk, a thousand thanks for visiting!
I am a Nordic musician, storyteller, dancerr, performance artist, author, and educator. Born and raised in Minnesota, I live in Bdote, traditional sacred land of the Dakota Nation.
My work focuses on my Norwegian American heritage and healing inherited cultural grief. Enjoy!
I
Völva Stav
I began "peeking under the lefse" of my Norwegian American identity in 1988 as an undergraduate at the University of St. Thomas. With runes, myths, archeology, and historical accounts I followed a trail that led me to the staff carrying woman. It was Winter Solstice 2003 that I joined Hardingfele player Karen Solgard with staff for rhythm to make rune-song. Karen said she admired all the work I have done in understanding the spiritual roots of our people. Then she spoke the truth that I would only be able to truly understand it if I could sing the songs and dance the dances of my people. And so I plunged into the traditional songs, stories, dances, and tunings of Norwegian heritage.
I called my self-study,Völva Stav (literally the staff carrying woman's staff). It has grown into a full and unique system of sacred body geometry, toning, runes, staff rhythm, and voice. This system creates physical alignment with the world tree, embodiment of Norse cosmology, pathways for metaphysical change, and is a tool for healing ørlög and inherited cultural grief.
In 2010 I released this manual to accompany my classes and videos to accompany the manual. Here is a free pdf for you:
