Kari
Tauring - The "High Priestess"
of the ritual show has been playing original music in
the Midwest for 15 years. The success of "A
Yuletide Celebration" has propelled her into performance,
teaching, and writing opportunities throughout the Twin
Cities. Her work has inspired an upcoming radio
documentary on Art and Religion and had moved her to
create more shows like "A Yuletide Celebration"
and "Remembering Valentine." "The Process of Discovering Origins/Building
Traditions has been incredible", Tauring says.
"As modern culture we are presented with a series
of holidays, a set of expectations go with them, and
then a series of products designed to meet those expectations.
At the end of it we are supposed to feel good, full
of meaning. And if we don't? Well, we didn't
buy the right stuff and we will try to purchase better
next year.Through these shows I
have learned so much about where and why these holidays
originated. In the process of re-presenting these
mostly agricultural rituals based on the astronomical
events of Solstices and Equinoxes and the "cross
quarters" or the points between them, I have found
so much meaning for this modern urban existence."
