Many people have asked me how I make my home made runes. (Runes Main Page)
So here is a little pictoral summary of the process for you!

First I find a downed tree or one that needs pruning. This Oak tree is in the lot next door to my parent's house. A branch came down a couple of Springs ago.

I ask it nice and if it says we can take it, then we cut a length of branch and take it to the shop. (tree honoring song)

My father cuts the runes, keeping them uniform with a jig.

This is a raw cut oak rune blank with the bark still on.

These came out so smooth they hardly need sanding. But I like the shiney, smooth look of the sanding.

I love sanding!

When I get the rune blanks home I size them into sets of 25.

Sometimes I use mineral oil on them to shine them up and help preserve them.

The one on the left is oiled. The one on the right is not.

Do they ever crack? They will if you get them wet.

We use hard wood that has been drying for at least one season.
So they really don't need the mineral oil.
It's an aesthetic choice.
