School Year
2005 - 2006
News from
Hiawatha-Howe Community School:
Sweet on
school Dance is Friday the 10th 3 - 6
There will be food, music, and dancing to the Blues
Live with Lolly Obeda on Sugar Shop
on KFAI
90.3 in Minneapolis.
The
Hiawatha school dance was a sucess.
Some people
in my class are going to a camp called Camp
Auduban ( ah-do-bahn) in May.
We are going
to the Minnesota
History Center.
We are doing
Art Adventure. (note from Mom, our theme is Let's
Celebrate Life)
And a few people
are going to the
Young authors conference. (Mom again, that's at Bethel College.
Just found that out on 2/7 at PTO. Gracias Professoro McGowan!)
My classroom
(Mr. McGowan's 5th Grade) did a fundraiser to help the victims of
hurricane Katrina. We raised $500.00 which was given to the American
Red Cross.
Youth
Performance Company has come to Hiawatha-Howe!
The
Youth Performance Company Show was Great The
Hiawatha students did great.
Student
Council 2005 - 2006 - Lucy (4th Grader), president by
school wide vote organized by Principal Rosalind Robbins. This included
speech writing and presentation by candidates, campaign management
and propaganda, and a school-wide vote. This year was odd since
half of our school was brand new. The merger of the Howe Community
School children and selected staff was great and challenging.

Goals:
Defining
Our Role
1. Service
to Hiawatha-Howe Community
Coat Exchange in the Entryway Lobby (like the pennies at Reidy's):
"Have a coat? Leave a coat. Need a Coat? Take a coat?"
On-going until Spring! We have some coats if you need 1 you can
find them near the confererence room.
Spirit Week
- School-wide Vote for crazy days garners student input
Volunteerism
at PTO Events: Carnival and Teacher Appreciation Breakfast
Presentations
at PTO Meetings
2. Personal
Development and Team Work
Group Art Projects:
May Baskets for Elderly, Posters
KFAI Appearance at "Sweet on Sugar"
School-wide
Announcements by Council Members
3. Greater Longfellow
Community Service
Food Drive
Pennies for
People 2
May Baskets
to Nile Nursing Home (a tradition of many years)
Our Biggest
Decision of 2005 - 2006 was not doing the school store again. A
Student Council this young should not be in charge of so much money.
An effort to run school store with PTO support would be a likely
adgena item for the 2006 -2007 Advisor (contact Prinipal Robbins
if you are interested in this position. kct)
