Isaac,
Hannah, Jack, Gage...The Greenthumbs have been so busy this week

and doing last minute research. I have never seen kids more engaged
with the process of learning about plants as I have this week! Yeay

PHOTOS
Week One
June 14 - in attendance were Kierian, Gage, Oskar
and Jack
Cooking -
Oskar an Kierian made us all pancakes from scratch and sausages.
Kierian notices that the recipe for pancakes was the same as for
waffles. You cook them differently. Jack played runescape
during this time. They each washed dishes after the meal.
Runes
- Rivers of the 9 Worlds, Name the World
Tree ------. They made a vocabulary list of known and unknown
terms from the chart of rune alphabet lineage. While doing on-line
research of their first term - Phoenicia
- they learned that Taautos got the runes from Ba'alat Nikkal (goddess
of the moon) by playing a flute. 8,000 B.C.
Skald - a vocab
word from the "Viking Times" book. (means bard)
Q. How did Odin get the Runes? Answer found on line from a link
off Phoenicia. At choice time Oskar and Kierian (but mostly Oskar)
played Runescape.
Biking and such
- We learned first aid procedures for possible arm fractures. We
practiced on Kierian as he had need of first aid after wiping out
on a jump. He was wearing his helmet.
Herbology
- Ms Kari, Gage, Jack, Oskar and Kierian met plantswoman Sandy
Arseth at the Medicinal Garden
housed at Minnehaha Aveneue Community Gardens.
They collected plant specimines, wrote their names, and explored
their uses. They took down a Buckthorn tree and planted hops. We
snacked on strawberries and tea. We were there for almost two hours.
Free Time
- Xio Lin Showdown and a little more Runescape then swimming and
biking.
June 15
- Kierian, Oskar, Jack, Isaac, and Hannah
Museum Field
Trip - We went to the MIA.
First we saw the outdoor sculpture. The kids identified several
medicial plants used in the borders including juniper, echinacia,
mint and birch trees. They discovered the labyrinth and were enthralled.
Other highlights included the Chinese warrior cerimonial dress and
helmets, Oskar's favorite part. Isaac stood and drew the the Egyptian
amulets for almost half and hour. Hannah loved the Mummy. Kierian
was overwhealmed by the African masks. Jack was fascinated by the
travel Menorah's and the Chinese rooms. Jack could remember much
about the "Winged Genius" that he learned about through
Hiawatha
Community School's involvement with the MIA's Art
Adventure Program.
We found works
from the Phonecians and Eutruscans that were mentioned in our Runeology
from yesterday. We looked at the pages from the scriptorium especially
the pages from the herbal/medicinal books and the music.
Herbology
- We took our samples from yesterday's garden trip and created paintings,
sketches and terminology just like the medeval pages we had seen
in the museum.
Runeology
- Isaac translated the Rune Your Day page from the packet and everyone
translated Ms. Kari's messages.
We swam at Hiawatha
Community
School Park and played quite a lot.

Wort oil. Kierian made Tarragon Vinnegar. We played a lot of
